What is Domain Authority and how does it influence SEO?

If you have been working on your SEO and have seen some positive results, then your web pages will be have been accruing authority and rank month on month. This increase in page authority will help to increase overall Domain Authority.

Domain Authority isn’t a single metric. Google will look at a variety of metrics to determine overall domain authority, and the reward will be increased rank, visibility and traffic.

Domain Authority is a metric used by marketers that helps them to predict how well your web pages are likely to rank in Google organic search results. A value of over 20 is considered reasonable across most sectors, but it is best to compare your site’s domain authority against that of your competitors. Domain Trust Flow

Domain Trust Flow is a score given to a website between 0-100 that shows how trustworthy a site is. It is based on the quality of backlinks pointing to your domain. If they are authoritative, trustworthy backlinks, domain trust flow will be higher. You will need to measure your own site’s Domain Trust Flow against that of your competitors to establish if there is a need to work on increasing it.

Domain Citation Flow

This is also scored between 0-100 and measures the Link Equity of a domain and considers the number of links pointing to it. If your site has more high authority domains linking to it, the more influential it will be and it will result in a higher Domain Citation Flow score. Government websites, and Educational Establishments are a good place to start when embarking on a linkbuilding strategy as they generally are seen as trusted domains, so are given high domain authority scores. Linking to these types of sites will help increase your overall domain authority and rank.

Page Authority

This is a metric that helps predict how well a given webpage is likely to rank in Google organic search results. Again this is scored from 0-100, with 100 being the highest authority. Page Authority can be increased with good on-site SEO and high levels of engagement.

Other factors that will influence your site’s overall Domain Authority:

Age of Domain

The number of years your site has been live will influence overall domain authority. It takes time to accrue authority so more established domains will have more.

Size of Domain

The number of pages your site has will have an impact too. It will be incredibly difficult for a site with only 20 pages to compete with a site which has over 1,000 as all these pages will have accrued some rank. The larger site will also have a far better chance of generating high levels of visibility in organic search pages too, because of the sheer volume of pages a user could land on.

Quality of Content

Your web content needs to be of good quality, be easy to read and be highly relevant to the products and services you offer. Ideally the site should have a blog so that useful, informative and authoritative content can be uploaded and shared on a regular basis. The more interactions and shares your blog articles achieve, the more authority your site will accrue. If an article you have posted gets 100’s of shares, this sends a clear signal to Google that your content is of high quality.

Positive Reviews

It goes without saying that generating positive reviews will increase your brand credibility and consumer confidence, but it is also the same for Google. If you have received lots of positive reviews from your customers, then this provides Google with the evidence it needs to reward your site with more authority. It shows your brand is a company who people trust and who are willing to connect with and buy from. Google will accumulate this review data over time and as long as the positive reviews continue, this will help strengthen your overall Domain Authority and Rank.

Social Engagement

The level of social buzz your brand generates across social channels will also have a positive influence on your site’s overall Domain Authority. Running paid social campaigns helps to expand reach, and often generates much higher levels of engagement and interactions. Brand mentions, clicks, Likes, follows, comments, reviews (if positive!) are key if you want your social marketing efforts to positively influence your SEO.
